Welcome to Mystery Quest, a fast-paced, heartwarming adventure for the digital age. Written by Maxine Mellor and developed with Indelarts, this interactive stage play follows three preteens—Quinn, Milo, and Evie—as they dive into an epic online game, battling trolls, solving riddles, and chasing clues. But when real life becomes complicated—dealing with campaigns, moving away, and a mysterious online stranger—the boundaries between game and reality begin to blur. Combining sharp dialogue, physical comedy, and live audience participation through mini-games, Mystery Quest is a thrilling, funny, and deeply relatable story about friendship, obsession, and the dangers of online anonymity. With immersive projections and a script as intelligent as it is heartfelt, it's a must-see for schools, families, and anyone who’s ever lost hours “playing.” Game on—because in this story, real life is the greatest adventure of all.
About Mystery Quest:
In an era where tweens and teens spend much of their social lives online, Mystery Quest tackles timely themes with warmth, wit, and authenticity. It explores:
-
The pressures of achievement in both digital and real-life spaces
-
The importance of digital safety and the risks of anonymous online connections
-
Friendship, loyalty, and growing up in a world full of distractions
-
The joy of play and the resilience found in teamwork
Quinn’s journey reflects the struggles many young people face: the tension between perfection and vulnerability, the desire to belong, and the challenge of asking for help. Her final school captain speech—an emotional high point—celebrates teamwork, imperfection, and learning from mistakes.
What Makes It Unique :
Audience Participation.
Through fun, low-pressure mini-games using simple handheld remotes—blocking arrows, bouncing over spikes, and whacking digital rats—everyone gets to be part of the adventure. Audience members actively participate in the story, making each performance dynamic and engaging.
Blended Worlds
Mystery Quest seamlessly merges on-stage performance with digital projections, creating an immersive experience. Quick transitions between the “real world” and the “game world” mirror the characters’ emotional journeys, immersing the audience in the story.
Representation & Inclusion
Developed with Indelarts, an inclusive theatre company, Mystery Quest features diverse, neurodiverse characters and reflects a wide range of lived experiences. The show champions empathy, cooperation, and celebrating what makes each individual unique.
Multi-Layered Writing
Energetic and hilarious, the script also carries emotional depth—resonating with both young audiences and adults. Parents will recognise the challenges of boundaries and connection, while kids will see themselves in the avatars, jokes, and relatable group adventures.
Ideal For:
School Touring
With minimal set requirements and vibrant visuals, Mystery Quest is perfect for school audiences. It encourages important conversations about online safety, friendships, and healthy screen habits after each show.
Family Theatre Programs
Fast-paced, funny, and full of action, it appeals to both kids and adults alike. The sharp humour, exciting technology, and meaningful messages make it a great choice for family audiences.
Festivals & Youth Arts Programs
Its interactive design makes Mystery Quest a perfect fit for festivals seeking to engage and involve audiences. The show’s breaking of the fourth wall creates an exciting, participatory experience for all.
Mystery Quest is more than a play—it’s a window into the way young people
connect, create, and care for each other in the digital age. It doesn’t preach or
patronise. Instead, it invites its audience to play, laugh, reflect, and maybe even log
off for a while—and go outside with a friend.
Because sometimes, the real adventure isn’t found on a screen.
It’s in the messy, beautiful chaos of friendship.
